A rare find and much sought after this Coalbrookdale ‘Serpent and Grape’ cast iron garden seat , second half 19th century, the armrests with hound headed terminals, above supports cast as coiled serpents amongst vines, the ends with registration number 17597 and diamond patent registration stamps; later replaced wood slatted back and seat.
NOTE: This design, number 17597 is the second oldest seat design registered and patented by the Coalbrookdale Foundry at the Public Records Office, on 6th April 1844. It appears as seat No. 9 in their 1875 Castings Catalogue, Section III, page 249

Condition: Small amounts of paint flaking but generally sound and in good condition.
